Recognizing Your Abu Lahab: The Self-Assessment
A structured way to see where the flame is most structurally active in your life
This assessment is not designed to diagnose flaws. It is designed to reveal where Abu Lahab is still organizing your positions before examination has fully entered.
Before the First Question
Noticing how the structure prefers to answer
There is something worth naming before this assessment begins. The mind operating inside Abu Lahab has a strong preference for certain answers.
It will move quickly toward responses that locate the flame in past situations, resolved, distant, safely historical. It will move away from responses that locate it in current positions, ones that are still active, still defended, still organized around.
So before reading the first question, ask yourself this: which answer did I want to choose before I read the question?
That pull toward a particular response, arriving before the question has been fully received, can function as a way the structure protects itself from the examination it is about to enter. Notice it. Then continue.
How to Use This Assessment
Answer for who you are now, not who you intend to be
For each statement, mark one of the following:
R — Rarely. This does not reflect my current patterns.
S — Sometimes. I notice this occasionally.
O — Often. This is familiar territory.
A — Almost always. This operates consistently.
Answer for who you actually are — not who you intend to become, not who you were before you began this work.

Domain One
The Verdict
This domain examines how you relate to positions you have already taken, and whether those positions remain open to updating or have quietly become fixed.

There is at least one person in my life about whom I have not genuinely updated my assessment in more than six months, despite ongoing interaction.

When I receive positive information about someone I have assessed negatively, my first internal response is skepticism rather than genuine reconsideration.

I can identify a position I hold that I would find it genuinely difficult to argue against, not because the evidence is overwhelming, but because the effort of reopening it feels disproportionate.
Domain Two
Loyalty and Alignment
This domain looks at how closely you link agreement with loyalty, and how disagreement registers in your system before you have examined its content.

In at least one relationship, I track, consciously or not, whether the other person is "with me" or not based on how fully they align with my positions.

When someone I trust disagrees with me, something registers before I have processed the content, something that feels closer to threat than to information.

I have reduced closeness with someone, not because of a specific event, but because of an accumulation of moments where they failed to confirm what I needed confirmed.
Domain Three
The Stall
This domain explores where movement has been withheld, not from lack of options, but because certain conditions have been silently required first.

There is an area of my life where meaningful movement has not occurred for longer than I can reasonably justify, and the reason involves something another person has not yet done or said.

I have declined opportunities, professional, relational, or personal, because proceeding would have felt like releasing a position I was not ready to release.

When I imagine resolving a long-standing conflict, the resolution I envision almost always begins with the other person acknowledging something first.
Domain Four
The Inherited Flame
This domain focuses on positions that arrived before you had the experience to examine them, and that still feel personal when they are questioned.

There is a category of people, belief, or behavior toward which I hold a strong position that I acquired before I had the experience to personally examine it.

When this position is challenged, my response feels less like intellectual disagreement and more like the defense of something personal, even when I cannot fully articulate why.

I can identify at least one position I hold where, if I am honest, what was inherited was certainty before examination ever had the chance to arrive.
Domain Five
The Accelerated Interpretation
This domain examines how quickly you assign meaning in ambiguous situations, and how tightly certainty attaches to incomplete information.

In ambiguous situations, an unanswered message, an unexpected tone, an unusual silence, I tend to arrive at a specific interpretation quickly, and that interpretation is rarely neutral.

I have been in situations where my interpretation of someone's behavior turned out to be incorrect, and the discovery did not significantly slow the speed of my next interpretation in a similar situation.

There are specific people or contexts in which I notice that my interpretations arrive faster and with more certainty than the available information actually supports.

This is not your weakness. This is where Abu Lahab is most structurally active, where the committed position has the deepest roots, and where the flame has been burning longest without examination entering.

The flame in each domain began as a legitimate response to something real. The question this document continues to ask is not whether the flame was justified.
The question is whether it is still receiving new information, or whether it decided, at some point, that it already had everything it needed.
Section Four does not explain the flame further. It locates the space that exists before it commits, and what becomes possible inside that space.
